Are You Able to Crack This? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Shaped the Modern Globe

There are numerous candidates for the designation as “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, though, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Before automated cutting, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be produced in less than a week.”

Owing to this speedy automated saw, which turned logs to boards using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, financial and cultural dominance across Europe and the world.

The Original True Industrial Device

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial true industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component converted the rotary motion into vertical motion to power the cutting blade. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral movement feeding the log toward the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead one precise increment each cycle.

“Each element seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate these parts in order that they operated in a precisely synchronized order, sawing with each downward motion and advancing on every upward stroke. This constituted a remarkably clever use of basic parts.”

Which brings us to the current challenge. The task is you to reinvent one of the fundamental concepts underpinning this historic machine.

Round and Up

Construct a mechanism that turns rotary motion into up-and-down motion. You have these items exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “sleeve”, that is a tube or housing into which one of the bars will fit perfectly. (Assume it is possible to mount components on a stand, so that the parts do not collapse.)
